“Emajõgi-Peipsi-Velikaja waterway”

In 2006 the cooperation project between Tartu and Pskov “Integrated and sustainable development of the Emajõgi-Peipsi-Velikaja Waterway as a tourism destination” having received support from the programme INTERREG IIIA was mainly aimed at developing the Emajõgi-Peipsi-Velikaja Waterway area as the target for tourism. In the process of the project the building projects, detailed plans and environmental effect assessments for four small ports and dock areas were composed.

There was also a need for a well-targeted marketing programme of the regions in order to make better use of the holiday industry potential of the Emajõgi-Peipsi-Velikaja waterway and its surroundings and guarantee the popularity of this “trademark” both in Estonia and in Russia. Therefore there was a goal to improve the accessibility of tourist information and to promote the project area supported by following activities:

1) creating the multi-lingual web pages about the Emajõgi Riverland and the Peipsi-Velikaja waterway

2) Tartu and Pskov had joint stands  about the Emajõgi-Peipsi-Velikaja waterway at the tourism fairs MITT 2007 in Moscow, TOUREST 2007 in Tallinn

3) marketing materials: brochures, posters and calendars about cultural events about the Emajõgi Riverland and Peipsi- Velikaja waterway in Estonian, Russian and English languages;  all publications were for free distribution;

3) thematic video-postcards about Emajõgi River, Peipsi Lake and Velikaja River;

4) advertising articles about Pskov region in tourism journals and newspapers were published in Estonia and in Russia.

In addition, in order to guarentee the sustainable development of the waterway, to attract new target groups to the region and to make a better use of the holiday potential of the Emajõgi-Peipsi-Velikaja waterway, it was necessary to investigate the situation, to define the hot spots and the priorities for further development.  Therefore a visitors survey was carried out within current project.
