The Tavern of Kantsi

Near the village of Alevi we shall find the last building in the area – the tavern of Kantsi built of granite. The tavern of Kantsi received its name from the Uue-Kastre stronghold (kants – in Estonian). When building the tavern in 1784, the ruins if the stronghold were used as a building material. The tavern was open more than one hundred years. The ancient stronghold has left in its moats, the wooden posts for the bridge, log rafts and parts of the wall hidden in the river banks, in the water and below the surface. At present the Centre of the Emajõe Suursoo Nature Reserve is situated here.
