The Emajõgi Great Mire

At the mouth of the Emajõgi there is the Emajõgi Great Mire which began to be protected in 1981 and it forms the largest delta marshlands with the territory of about 200 km². More than a half of the territory is covered with low-lying swamps. In spring there are widely-spread floods. The protected area is a very important nesting and resting place for the species of water and swamp fowl. The centre of the reserve with the visitors’ house is at the distance of 25 km from Tartu on the left bank of the Emajõgi.
